Global Education Unit
World Literature is a course which lends itself beautifully to Global Education. At the start of the TGC Program, my focus remained on one unit, Fairytales from Around the World. This unit was originally developed to better connect students to cultures around the world, but through my research, I found there was much more my students could gain. Before long, a simple lesson turned in to a massive unit that could easily continue for months.

After my research and application of this unit, I immediately found the value of incorporating Global Education in to all units. With the introduction of Common Core, it became abundantly clear that Common Core would need to drive some of the direction of my units. Our library media teacher had just attended a conference on the 21st Century Skills and Digital Media. We quickly discovered there was a beautiful (and necessary) marriage between 1) Common Core for English, 2) Global Education, 3) 21st Century Skills, and 4) Common Core Digital Resources. Tedious, painstaking hours of work resulted in six units (A Doll's House, Fables and Fairytales, Like Water for Chocolate, Night, Term Paper, and Things Fall Apart) that embrace all of these elements.
